Waste Warriors @ Red Rose

Smoothies on a bike in Chester-le-Street

Years 3 and 4 took part this week in sessions as part of our Waste Warriors programme, which featured four engaging activities in the afternoon. The first session focused on making smoothies using slightly overripe fruits that would typically be thrown away, showing how we can reduce food waste in a fun and tasty way. The smoothies were made in a blender powered by a bike! The second session was a food tasting adventure, where students sampled a variety of foods like radish, mango, pear, and pomegranate. This gave them the chance to explore new flavours and learn more about different types of produce. The third session looked at the best way to store food items so that they had the greatest shelf life. The final session looked at food waste. The pupils had to rank the food items from most wasted to least wasted and how they could reduce food waste.

All the sessions, delivered by staff from the REfUSE Shop in Chester-le-Street, offered valuable insights and sparked important conversations about how we can all work to reduce food waste. They were truly ‘food for thought’!
