The air in the classroom has been thick with “egg-spectation” since seven unassuming eggs arrived on Monday. By Tuesday, the quiet was finally broken. We watched as the first pioneer began the grueling work of slowly zipping its way around the circumference of the shell until it tumbled out—damp, exhausted, and triumphantly new.
Wednesday morning brought a delightful chorus of high-pitched tweets to greet us. Three more feathered arrivals had successfully navigated their way out of their shells overnight, transforming the incubator into a fuzzy huddle of golden down and wobbly legs. We are captivated by the architectural marvel of the egg: a vessel engineered to be a fortress against the outside world, yet delicate enough to surrender when a tiny, determined life decides it is time to meet the sun. Now, with four chicks stretching their wings, we keep a watchful eye on the remaining three, waiting for those first tell-tale cracks to appear. Today will see them transferred to their larger home!
