Reading is such an important skill to develop and we put a high emphasis on this at Red Rose. One thing that we do in school at the end of every month is to celebrate the reading that has taken place in school during that month. We use a scheme called Accelerated Reader to encourage and monitor the reading that pupils are doing and the level of understanding that they have for the books that they have read.
When a pupil has read a book they take a ‘quiz’ on the book which then assesses how well they have understood the book and its contents. With the scheme, we can then advise pupils on which level of books would be good for them to read next to develop their comprehension and reading skills.
We celebrate each month with the ‘top 5 readers’ in each of our Houses (Durham, Lambton, Lumley and Raby) and we had our first group for the month of September. Well done to the September Top Readers.
