Great Fire of London Workshop Key Stage 1

We were thrilled to welcome a fantastic team of historians from Durham University Libraries to our school today for an engaging workshop with our Year One and Two pupils! The children had an exciting time stepping back over 350 years to investigate the Great Fire of London. During the “Being a Historian” session, they created their own questions about the fire and learned how historians find answers by analysing objects and pictures. The excitement continued with the “Bucket Game,” a lively team challenge where children worked together to practice 17th-century fire-fighting techniques to put out a classroom ‘fire.’ They also developed their geographical skills by studying a map made just after the Great Fire to understand the extent of the damage across the city, and finished the day by meeting the famous diarist Samuel Pepys, trying their hand at “Quill Writing” to create their own piece of historical handwriting. It was a wonderful day of active, hands-on learning that truly brought history to life!
