One of the British Values that we promote at Red Rose is Democracy. Every year, we hold House Captain and Vice Captain elections for the honour of pupils representing their house for the last year of their time at Red Rose. The four houses are linked to local castles: Durham, Lambton, Lumley and Raby. Different events contribute to the place of the House system in our school. Some of the ways include:
- Sports Day – teams compete against each other in a full range of track and field events
- Reward system – being awarded value stars feeds in to the house system
- Accelerated Reader – each month the top readers in each house are recognised
The election process starts with each pupil who wants to put themselves forward for election preparing and delivering a speech. They then present the speech to both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 assemblies. This year, as always, the speeches were incredibly well prepared and delivered. Inspiring how they wanted to represent their house.
After the speeches, every child gets to vote for their choice. Top votes become the house captain and second place becomes vice captain. Well done to all those who put themselves forward and huge congratulations to the newly elected House Captains and Vice Captains.
We also have representatives on the School Council, Rights Respecting group and the Eco-Council who help to shape our school.
